**Note: I wrote this a week ago so it’s not totally up to date, but haven’t had a chance to post sorryyyyyyy
Two and a half months on the road come to an end in Darwin, Northern Territory. I write this post from the Darwin Airport, waiting for a flight to Cairns, Queensland. Big things to come in far North Queensland stay tuned.
Last you heard from me, I was trapped in Broome due to an incoming cyclone. Information from the Visitor Center implied the road would be closed for the foreseeable future. However, Your Honor, that was not true. I should have known that the road would open long enough to pass comfortably: Australians love precaution and the Visitor Center woman was no exception.
We enjoyed our time in Broome 4 wheel driving out to majestic red cliffs and drinking ginger beer, then continued our journey east on the Great Northern Highway. At this point in the journey, Maddy and I were beginnin to get frustrated with the amount of main attractions being closed due to Wet Season. We made the best of it by off-roading to some pretty epic, secluded natural sites and swimming holes when we could. The benefit of traveling this region in March is the waterfalls/water features were at full volume, and there was never a crowd (activities/accomodation are cheaper too).
We made quick work across the border to Northern Territory, where we were greeted by a sign saying speed limits throughout the territory are 110kmph followed quickly by a 130kmph speed sign. I chose 120kmph. Still vastly unclear. We made trips to Nitmiluk, Litchfield, and Kakadu National Parks, all excellent despite being 70% closed. Kakadu was particularly memorable, cruising through a crocodile infested lake to see rock art, and learning to weave Pandanus from an Aboriginal woman.
We ended the trip with a few slow days in Darwin to recombobulate before tackling the next portion of our journeys. Made a pit stop in the city center to taste kangaroo, buffalo, and crocodile. The roadtrip was rewarding in being able to enjoy a new beautiful place everyday, but I am also looking forward to a bit of stability and routine in the next few months before tackling the proceeding leg of travel.
