Van Life

All has been up since car-gate. After catching the train from the suburbs into Melbourne, I spent the evening my car broke down devastated but working on a plan. I ultimately sold the car for parts and moved all of my things into a 2-day van rental. I spent 2 days selling everything I could on Facebook which was decently successful. Broke my heart the most to have to part ways with my surfboards.

I had planned to convoy from Melbourne with a girl planning a similar route in her new van.  We had got on really well and it turned out the passenger seat was still open in her rig! So a week after the break down I was still able to hit the road according to plan.

My time in Melbourne besides the car was lovely. I got to watch the Australian Open Men’s Singles finals from the grounds and peruse a few of the city markets. Soon enough Charlotte and Aiden flew down to join me and tackle a 2-day trip on the Great Ocean Road. I had initially asked them to join me for this portion of the roadtrip as it’s known to be one of the best short roadtrips in Australia. The views and time spent away from the city did not disappoint.

Back to Melbourne, then Natalie began our journey West. We made quick time making our way to Adelaide. We spent most of our time here catching up on a few admin tasks and getting the van ready as it was the last proper city we’d be in until we reach Perth.

Next up: Kangaroo Island. Expensive ferry ride, but incredible wildlife and views. Our first night we parked up near a jetty overlooking the beach and watched the sunset with massive waves crashing over the rocks. The following day we went to Seal Bay and saw at least 30 sea lions. I love them. They have to most ridiculous legs and run around and will stand around with their chin up as if their distinguished.

Upon return to the mainland we dashed up to Port Augusta where we had planned to meet up with two other cars to convoy our way to Perth. Our silly little group left Port Augusta and went to Whyalla to play with dolphins and pelicans. We spent the evening at a highway pullover enjoying the finest goon bag and the most stars I had ever seen.

Van living is loads of fun. Working in hospitality prior, I realized that I rarely got to see the sunset or sunrise. Now I get to see both everyday which I have yet to take for granted. Everyday I’ve gotten to wake up somewhere new to explore, and I’m stoked to spend the next month or two on the road.
